1893: One of America’s first horseless carriages is taken for a short test drive in Springfield, Mass., by Frank Duryea, who had designed the vehicle with his brother, Charles.

1938: A hurricane strikes parts of New York and New England, causing widespread damage and claiming some 700 lives.

1948: Milton Berle makes his debut as permanent host of “The Texaco Star Theater” on NBC-TV.

1961: The first Boeing CH-47 Chinook military helicopter makes its first hovering flight.

1986: The Youngstown Revitalization Foundation unanimously endorses a plan to move the Mahoning County Department of Human Services to the McGuffey Mall on the city’s East Side.

Youngstown Municipal Court Clerk Rosemary Durkin says she favors a proposed consolidation of city and county courts, but believes the state should step in to fund all Ohio courts.

1971: John Petak of Campbell is perhaps the first 18-year-old in Mahoning County to cast an election ballot as he votes in the nonpartisan primary in Campbell. All 18-year-olds will be eligible for the first time in the Nov. 2 general election.

United Service Co. of Youngstown purchases Thornton Laundry and Dry Cleaning on W. Rayen Avenue, paying $150,000 for the property and an unknown amount for the rest of the business.

Students at Austintown Fitch High School will be required to display a blue safety sticker that proves the car has passed a vehicle safety check for the car to be parked in the school lot.

1961: John Scott, president of the Union of Unemployed Workers in the Mahoning Valley, calls on Youngstown City Council to use its influence with county commissioners to help restore a 20 percent cut in welfare benefits.

The U.S. Senate unanimously confirms Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Frank J. Battisti as the new federal district judge for northern Ohio.

1936: Trumbull Deputy Sheriff Earl Bash announces that between 50,000 and 100,000 fish are being placed in the West Mahoning River.

University of Pittsburgh extension courses will open Sept. 21 at Central Junior High School in Youngstown.

A shortage of some farm products in the area will mean higher prices, which will be hard on consumers, but will allow Mahoning County farmers to end the year in the black, agricultural agents say.
