Saturday’s games

Kansas State 37, Kent State 0

MANHATTAN, KAN.

Kansas State didn’t need any late-game heroics this time. David Garrett returned an interception 45 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, Collin Klein dazzled with his legs and the Wildcats beat penalty-prone Kent State for their first shutout in more than five years. Kansas State, which needed a touchdown pass by Klein in the closing minutes two weeks ago to beat Eastern Kentucky, had no such trouble with the Golden Flashes. The Wildcats scored on five of six first-half drives to build a 34-0 lead, and then coasted through an uneventful second half.

Wyoming 28, Bowling Green 27

BOWLING GREEN

Wyoming blocked a late game-tying extra point. Trailing 28-14 late in the fourth quarter, Bowling Green’s Matt Schilz threw touchdown passes on two consecutive drives. The first, a 32-yard strike to Kamar Jorden, and the second, to Ray Huston for 10 yards, drew the Falcons (2-1) within one. But the Cowboys blocked the ensuing extra point with only three seconds remaining. Brett Smith led the way for the Wyoming (3-0), connecting on a 10-yard pass to receiver Dominic Rufran to give the Cowboys a 28-14 lead. Smith, the first true freshman to start for Wyoming since 1974, threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns and added 37 yards on the ground. Schilz finished with 437 yards passing and four touchdowns in the loss. The win marks the first 3-0 start for Wyoming since 1996.

Ohio 44, Marshall 7

ATHENS

Tyler Tettleton threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, cementing the Bobcats’ best start in 35 years. Tettleton was 20 of 29 for 285 yards and also rushed for 53 yards on nine carries for the Bobcats (3-0), who have won their first three games of the season for the first time since 1976. Ryan Boykin had 130 yards rushing with a touchdown on 25 carries, and caught two passes for 20 yards for Ohio.

Ball State 28, Buffalo 25

MUNCIE, IND.

Keith Wenning threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Willie Snead with 29 seconds remaining to lead Ball State. The score culminated an 18-play, 75-yard drive for the Cardinals (2-1, 1-0 MAC) after Buffalo (1-2, 0-1) took the lead. Wenning completed 24 of 36 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns. Jahwan Edwards ran for 112 yards and two TDs on 22 carries for Ball State.

Western Michigan 44, Central Michigan 14

KALAMAZOO, MICH.

Alex Carder passed for 355 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score, and Western Michigan cruised to victory.
