The Hine Memorial Fund of the Youngstown Foundation has funded Youngstown State University’s SMARTS — Students Motivated by the Arts — for 2011-12, in collaboration with Creative-Bridge Coalition, to establish the SMARTS Rhythmic Arts Project (SMARTS Trap).
SMARTS Trap, which serves special-needs students from kindergarten through 12th grade, is a percussion-based intervention program that teaches life skills to children and young adults with cognitive and developmental disabilities.
The pilot project will take place at up to five partner locations that serve youth with special needs. It’s designed for K-12 students with cognitive and developmental disabilities that are residents of Youngstown and the surrounding area.
SMARTS Trap is the first program in the Youngstown community and Northeast Ohio region to provide these students with such services through Trap and SMARTS, and it’s also the first project developed through collaboration between YSU SMARTS and Creative-Bridge Coalition.
