No cause yet in Do-Cut fire in Canfield

Staff report

Canfield

Investigators are still trying to determine what started the fire that devastated Do-Cut True Value.

Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the state fire marshal’s office, said in an email Thursday that the heavy equipment fire crews used to extinguish the blaze made it difficult for investigators to trace the point of origin.

Cartmill said they were “unable to conduct a complete origin and cause analysis” but “determined the fire likely started in the center of the store.”

The fire started just after 2 a.m. Wednesday at the South Raccoon Road business, which has been in Canfield since 1979.

Cardinal Joint Fire District Chief Don Hutchison said the blaze spread quickly and took five departments about two hours to extinguish.

The business was a total loss, he said. The total market value of the 17,980-square-foot-property is $618,500, according to the Mahoning County Auditor’s website. The owner, Dante Terzigni, has said the business will be rebuilt. Do-Cut’s Warren site on Youngstown Road is open.

Cartmill said the fire destroyed the building and caused fire and heat damage to most of the inventory.

Investigators have several follow-ups to complete before a cause will be determined, he said.
