The Austintown Junior Women’s League champions the values of community service, friendship and personal enrichment. Every summer, the group focuses on the tenet of community service by donating to worthy Austintown causes.

On July 27, representatives from the AJWL traveled around Austintown to allocate their funds. The morning began with a $1,000 donation to the Austintown Senior Center, which will help director Bill Adams fund senior programs and buy computer desks for the facility.

Adams took a few moments during the senior’s bingo game to thank the group for their continued support of the center. “It was the Women’s league donation last year that provided the chairs and tables where we enjoy our bingo games and lunch conversations. We’d be sitting on the floor without you,” Adams shared.

“We’re just glad to see the chairs filled with happy people,” said AJWL president Theresa Lyden.

After their stop at the senior center, the AJWL donated $1,500 to Austintown Township Park for the purchase of exercise equipment, in honor of Joyce Gottron’s many years of service to the park. A $500 check was also handed to Camp Woodside, so camp organizers can continue to provide free lunches and fun events to community kids every summer. Austintown’s league has supported township organizations since its founding in 1994.

“There is a lot of great things that happen here in Austintown,” said AJWL treasurer Becky DeFrank. “It’s our passion to support causes that often don’t get much assistance otherwise.”
