Recycling bin to be relocated

The recycling bin at the Springfield Township administration building will be moved to the New Middletown recycling site there.
The reason is low use, township officials said at their meeting Wednesday. Recycling officials said last month that due to the turnpike construction project, traffic in the area has declined along with use of the recycling site.
The bin will be moved temporarily to the New Middletown recycling site in front of the water tower at 10720 Struthers Road. Trustees took the action at the request of Dorothy Keish, township recycling coordinator.
Also, Fire Chief Matt Gebhardt announced that township firefighters will do door-to-door canvassing Oct. 9 and 10 to inform residents about fire prevention and pass out educational material for children.
Gebhardt told trustees the effort also familiarizes children with firefighters. The crews will be wearing identifiable shirts and will travel in fire trucks. Gebhardt said the department hopes to reach all township residents.
In other business, resident Ginny Tarka gave trustees information about possible concerns to the township from the Marcellus Shale drilling in the area. She directed trustees to a website, www.NEOGAP.org, which explains possible risks involved.
Trustees approved a motion to pay B&J Electric up to $10,000 for upgrading to energy-efficient light fixtures at all three fire stations. Half of the purchase cost will be reimbursed under an Ohio Edison rebate program. The new lights will replace old fixtures, which take bulbs that soon will be obsolete.
They also approved a motion to pay Gordon Tree Experts up to $3,000 for removal of 26 trees at the old Summer Cemetery as well as the purchase of $3,700 worth of new quick-change connectors to make the fire department’s jaws-of-life extrication tool easier to use.
Trustee Gerald Guterba announced that a local garden club has volunteered to plant flowers and beautify the township building and other township sites.
Trustees set trick-or-treat hours in the township for 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
