Man shot to death after fight in New Castle

A man who was shot while trying to break up a fight has died, police say.

Zamara Stelter, 35, was shot in the head 9:32 p.m. Tuesday outside 1107 Pin Oak Drive, police said Wednesday.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he died early Wednesday morning, police said.

Witnesses told police that Stelter tried to break up a fight between two women. Someone else there shot him. There were no arrests as of late Wednesday night.

A man was shot in the foot after he was caught in crossfire Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the man was sitting on a front porch in the 200 block of Hilton Avenue on the city’s South Side when two other men began shooting at each other in the street.

Police said they were arguing over a woman about 4 p.m.

Police reported an arrest of Allan Williams, 23, of East Boston Avenue, who was charged with felonious assault and taken to Mahoning County jail. They did not find the other man.

The injured man was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

Learn to stitch

Volunteers from the Youngstown Guild of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America will teach cross stitch to adults at 1 p.m. today at the Poland Library, 311 S. Main St. The Guild will give each participant a complete cross-stitch kit during the free class.

Federal indictments

Three of the 12 people indicted Wednesday in federal court on illegal firearms charges are from Youngstown, said the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.

William A. Keyes, 32, is accused of having a .38-caliber revolver and ammunition Aug. 17, despite having a previous conviction for possession of cocaine, said Atty. Steven M. Dettelbach in a news release.

Stacey D. Mahone, 34, faces allegations of having a .25-caliber pistol and ammunition March 24. Mahone has a prior conviction for domestic violence, possession of cocaine and preparation of cocaine for sale. Michael C. Rodriguez, 21, is accused of having a Smith and Wesson .40-caliber pistol and ammunition Aug. 3. He has previously been convicted of burglary.

Five of the defendants are from Akron and four are from the Greater Cleveland area.

Teen leadership workshop set Friday

Lynn Duffey, a social worker, presents a teen leadership/peer education workshop at 7 p.m. Friday at 1105 Elm St., across from Wick Park, on the city’s North Side.

Teens will be trained as HIV/AIDS educators based on the Promoting Student Intelligence Module and receive a certificate of attendance. Teens will benefit from learning accurate information on HIV/AIDS, acting as positive teen role models and developing public speaking skills.

Farmers’ market

The Lake Milton Farmers’ Market is open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays at the amphitheater at Lake Milton State Park. The weekly market is organized by the park’s nature and arts volunteers.

‘Cleaning up’ hunger

In honor of Hunger Action Month this month, LaFrance is “Cleaning Up” hunger in the Mahoning Valley, and there are many ways that you can get involved.

Throughout the month, the community is invited to drop-off nonperishable food items at LaFrance Cleaners locations and Nemenz IGA and Save-a-Lot stores. In addition to contributing nonperishable food items, individuals can participate in Clean Up Hunger in other ways, including the “Hang-a-Shirt” promotion by donating $1 at any of the five LaFrance locations.

In exchange for your $1 donation, your name will be hung on a shirt in the store. LaFrance is also holding a Clean Up Hunger raffle at all five locations. Individuals can purchase a raffle ticket for $1, 10 tickets for $5 or 20 tickets for $10 and be eligible to win $500 worth of free dry cleaning.

Heart Walk Saturday

The American Heart Association hosts its annual Heart Walk on Saturday at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on YSU’s campus.

Walkers need to arrive at 9 a.m. for pre-event activities and will begin to walk at 10 a.m.

Health-educational materials, activities and nutritional information will be provided to walkers. Sponsors will offer giveaways.

Funds from the event support cardiovascular disease and stroke research and educational programs locally and across the nation.

The Poland Post Office, 125 McKinley Way, will have a “Passport Fair” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday . The fair is part of the U.S. State Department’s nationwide Passport Day. The Poland Post Office will accept passport applications and take the necessary passport photos. Passport photos are an additional $15.

Mahoning County Board of Developmental Disabilities will sponsor its second annual classic car show and levy kick-off rally from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bev MASCO, 825 Bev Road.

The rally will serve as the official start the campaign for Issue 825.

The event is open to the public and will feature activities including a chili cook-off contest, auction baskets to benefit the student/client activity fund, Men’s Garden Club sale, music and dancing, Boardman band and fire department, Aut Mori Grotto clowns, pony rides, face painting and games.

Drug destruction set

Local law-enforcement officers from the North East Ohio Law Enforcement Task Force will be collecting and destroying prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday as part of Operation: Empty Medicine Cabinet.

The officers will accept unused or expired drugs in their original containers at Geauga-Trumbull Solid Waste Management District at 5138 Enterprise Drive in Warren off Parkman Road, near the state Route 5 bypass.
