Valuation increase posted

The slight increase in real-estate tax value in the Springfield Local School District, which includes the village of New Middletown, is not enough to be significant, said village Fiscal Director Carl Flitcraft Jr.
The school district posted a 0.6 percent increase in valuation, despite an overall average decline of 4.2 percent in Mahoning County in a recent real estate revaluation.
Council, at its meeting Monday, approved a certificate of estimated resources from the treasurer, which shows the village will receive $62,852 in general property tax, $191,615 from the police levy and $59,973 from the fire levy in 2012. Flitcraft said these figures reflect an increase of only about $1,000 next year.
Also Monday, council announced there will be a village leaf pickup from Oct. 17 to Nov. 28. Bags are available at the village administration building free for village residents. Others will be charged 25 cents per bag. The labor and dumping fees will be paid with a $2,000 grant from the Mahoning County Green Team.
Council also extended current contracts with the village’s four full-time police officers until the end of the year to give them time to see whether the 2-mill police levy passes in November and what the village’s financial situation will be.
Three of the contracts expired at the end of August and one at the end of November.
They also approved spending $1,900 to replace two surveillance cameras in Welker Park and buy two new cameras, along with related equipment, to increase detection of vandalism and crime.
