Ground breaking planned for center

Ground breaking ceremonies will be 10:30 a.m. today at Meridian Community Care, 527 N. Meridian Road.

The ground will be broken for renovations and a 12,000-square-foot expansion at the center’s main campus.

The additional space is being added to enhance the prevention, adolescent and outpatient services provided by Meridian, officials said.

Petition drive

Trumbull County Democratic Party sponsors a drive-through House Bill 194 petition-signing event from 4 to 6 p.m. today at McMenamy’s Restaurant and Banquet Center parking lot, 325 Youngstown-Warren Road (U.S. Route 422).

Party Chairman Dan Polivka says the bill is an attempt to disenfranchise Democratic base voters.

Fair Elections Ohio is leading the petition drive and campaign to repeal the bill.

If the required number of signatures is obtained, the bill can be put on hold until voters can decide it in a ballot initiative in 2012.

Free lecture

Newton Falls

Dr. Ted Suzelis presents a free lecture — “How to Eat and Live Right for Your Blood Type” — at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Newton Falls Community Center, 52 E. Quarry St.

Attendees will receive free blood typing, and there will be a raffle to give away free blood-type books.

Seeking volunteers

Community Legal Aid, a nonprofit law firm serving the civil legal needs of the low-income community, is seeking volunteers for the Volunteer Advocacy Legal Unit (VALU) Program in Mahoning County.

Volunteers assist victims of domestic violence through the court process of obtaining a Civil Protection Order (CPO).

Volunteers will work out of the VALU office located at the Mahoning County Courthouse.

Training will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5.

Armed robbery on South Side

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating the armed robbery of a South Side man walking to a corner store shortly after 8 p.m. Monday.

Police said the 18-year-old Brooklyn Avenue man was walking along Philadelphia Avenue heading to a store to buy some cigarettes when he was approached by two men appearing to be about 20 years old and wearing dark clothing.

The man told police one of the would-be thieves asked if he smoked “weed” to which he replied no, he was headed to get some cigarettes.

The man told police one of the men pulled out a handgun, and the other went through his pockets taking a cellphone, $20 and some cigarettes.

The two armed men ran off through the rear yard of a nearby house.
