CANFIELD

The Thursday opening and closing of two of the most-watched stock markets in the world will have ties to the Mahoning Valley.

Thomas Siering, chief executive officer of Maryland-based Two Harbors Investment Corp., will ring the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange. By his side will be Youngstown native William Roth, who serves as the company’s co-chief financial officer.

Two Harbors Investment Corp. (NYSE: TWO) is a real-estate investment trust that invests in residential mortgage-backed securities, residential mortgage loans and other financial assets.

Since its initial public offering in October 2009, Two Harbors’ market capitalization has increased to $1.3 billion from about $100 million, according to a news release from the company.

Also on Thursday, John Gulas, president and CEO of Canfield-based Farmers National Bank Corp., will ring the closing bell at the Nasdaq Stock Market in New York’s Times Square.

The honor coincides with the bank’s first day of trading on the Nasdaq Capital Market. Farmers’ stock symbol will be FMNB, the same symbol it used as an over-the-counter stock. Farmers, founded in 1887, has assets of $1.01 billion and has 18 retail banking offices and two trust offices throughout the Mahoning Valley.

In addition to taking part in the opening of the New York Stock Exchange, Roth also will be a panelist for “Police and Practice — What’s Next for the Mortgage Market?” on Thursday along with other members of Two Harbors Investment.

Roth, the son of Atty. Daniel Roth of Youngstown and Merabeth Lurie of Liberty, grew up in Youngstown and attended Harding Elementary School and Hayes Junior High School on the city’s North Side. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1979 and received his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1981.

“I always am thrilled to see a Youngstown connection,” said Daniel Roth. “When you think of two major events occurring on the same day involving Youngstown natives, I think it should make us all pretty proud of the kind of people who grow up in the Youngstown area.”

Daniel Roth also said that he is extremely proud of his son.
