Temple 41, Akron 3

AKRON

Bernard Pierce rushed for 150 yards and scored three touchdowns in the second quarter as Temple routed Akron. The game was halted because of lightning with 6:04 left in the first quarter, resuming after a delay of 1 hour and 19 minutes. The Owls (2-0, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) opened consecutive seasons at 2-0 for the first time since the late 1960s and won their fifth straight over the Zips (0-2, 0-1). With Temple leading 7-3, Akron quarterback Clayton Moore was sacked and fumbled. Kamal Johnson recovered for the Owls at the Zips 4, and Pierce scored on a 3-yard run with 13:59 left in the first half. He scored twice more in the next 8:17, on runs of 2 and 37 yards to give Temple a 28-3 halftime lead. Pierce tied his career mark for touchdowns in a game for the second straight week.

Kentucky 27, Central Michigan 13

LEXINGTON, KY.

Josh Clemons scored on an 87-yard run, and Morgan Newton ran in a fourth-quarter touchdown to seal Kentucky’s comeback win. Clemons’ rush became the longest in school history for a freshman, and the longest for a UK player of any class since Bernie Scruggs ran for 88 yards on Oct. 24, 1970. Central Michigan controlled the first half, leading 13-6 at halftime. In the third quarter, Newton led a drive that ended in a 34-yard touchdown pass to La’Rod King with 4:07 left to tie the game. Clemons’ touchdown run gave the Wildcats (2-0) their first lead of the game in the third quarter. Newton added a 1-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-goal play to give the Wildcats a two-touchdown lead in the fourth quarter. Ryan Radcliff threw for 295 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions for the Chippewas (1-1).

Buffalo 35, Stony Brook 7

BUFFALO, N.Y.

A week after an opening loss at Pittsburgh, Buffalo took out its frustration against Stony Brook Saturday behind Branden Oliver and Chazz Anderson. Oliver, who gained 114 yards rushing in the 35-16 loss at Pitt, had his second straight 100-yard game with a career-high 126 on 15 carries.

Eastern Michigan 14, Alabama State 7

YPSILANTI, MICH.

Dominique Sherrer ran for a touchdown and Eastern Michigan piled up 336 rushing yards.Sherrer finished with 111 yards on 16 carries, while Javonti Greene ran 22 times for 146 yards for the Eagles (2-0), who held Alabama State of the FCS to minus-13 yards rushing. Quarterback Alex Gillett ran for 74 yards — including a 58-yard run that set up Sherrer’s 6-yard score in the third quarter — and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Nick Olds for the game’s only first-half points.

No. 22 South Florida 37, Ball State 7

TAMPA, FLA.

B.J. Daniels threw for a career-best 359 yards and one touchdown, leading South Florida. USF coach Skip Holtz was interested to see how his players would react to being ranked for the first time in nearly two years, and the Bulls (2-0) responded with a focused, dominating performance.

Western Michigan 38, Nicholls State 7

KALAMAZOO, MICH.

Alex Carder threw for 143 yards and two touchdowns to lead Western Michigan. Both of Carder’s scoring passes came in the first half along with a pair of touchdown runs by Brian Fields, who finished with 54 yards rushing. Chika Madu accounted for the only score for the Colonels (1-1) with a 36-yard interception return midway through the second quarter.

Kansas 45, N. Illinois 42

LAWRENCE, KAN.

Jordan Webb hit B.J. Beshears with a 6-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 9 seconds to go and Kansas escaped with a wild, back-and-forth victory.
