Poland alumn receives scholarships at the Canfield Fair
Carly Carcelli, received two scholarships at the Canfield Fair during Youth Day activities on Sept. 1. She received the Darrel Bacon Memorial Junior Fair Scholarship ($750) and also the Mahoning County Junior Agricultural Education Assistance Award ($500). Carcelli is a 2011 graduate of Poland Seminary High School.
Sept. 11 Memorial Ceremony
On Sept. 11, 2011 at 2 p.m., American Legion Mahoning Valley Post 15, American Legion Auxiliary Mahoning Valley Unit 15, and Sons of The American Legion Mahoning Valley Squadron 15 will conduct a memorial service in honor of the victims of the attacks on The World Trade Center in New York, The Pentagon in Arlington, Va., and for the victims of the plane crash near Pittsburgh.
This memorial service is open to the public, and will be held at the War Memorial Building Post 15 Home ,35 Cortland Street in Poland. Representatives from the Western Reserve Joint Fire District, the Poland Township and Poland Village Police Departments, local government officials, and representatives of the American Legion Family are scheduled to participate in the ceremony.
Those attending are asked to wear red, white, and blue. Cash donations will be accepted by Squadron 15 to support its charitable contributions to American Legion projects and programs. For additional information, email salsquadron15@yahoo.com or call Squadron 15 at 330-565-5333.
Dance practice for Michael Jackson’s Thriller
If you love Michael Jackson, love to dance or just love Halloween, this is the event is for you! Dance practice for Michael Jackson’s Thriller will be every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Petco in Boardman.
Local participants will join with dancers around the world, simultaneously performing the Thriller dance for charity on Oct. 29.

Hospice volunteer class begins Monday
Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class begins Monday in the Hospice House conference room. Classes are from noon to 3 p.m. every Monday through Oct. 17. Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for the patients and their family and how volunteers fit into that team.
Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways, including being companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes and helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed.

Mickey Schuster Scholarship spaghetti dinner set
Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Dr., Boardman will host its semiannual Mickey Schuster Scholarship Spaghetti Dinner on Sept. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $6.50 for adults and $3 for children under 12.
Tickets are available at the door or by calling the church office at 330-758-5745. The dinner includes salad, bread, pasta with meatballs, dessert and drink. Takeouts are available.
All proceeds go to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to college students at Bethel.
Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA meets Tuesday
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA will hold its meeting at A La Cart in Canfield on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will begin with a dinner of Swiss steak, twice-baked potato, green beans, salad and apple dumplings.

Fall fashion preview set
The Network Council of Mahoning Valley of ABWA will sponsor its 22nd annual Fall Fashion Preview on Sept. 25 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and lunch will be at 2 p.m.
Cody of Shooting Start, Nashville, will be the entertainment for the evening. There will also be a raffle of a 32-inch flat screen TV, Split the Pot and a Chinese auction. Tickets are available for $25 per person until Thursday by calling Shirley Pappagallo at 330-207-9779.

Local remodeler builds its way to the top
For the 18th consecutive year, Duncan’s Bath and Kitchen Center, located in Poland, has been designated as one of America’s Top 500 Remodelers. Pancake breakfast helps animal rescue organizations
TNR of Warren and For the Dogs Animal Rescue will sponsor a pancake breakfast on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m. at Packard Park Indoor Shelter House, 1703 Mahoning Ave. in Warren.
Cost is $7 per person for all-you-can-eat-pancakes served with sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. In addition to the breakfast, tickets will be available for a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction.
Both groups are nonprofit, volunteer-based and rely solely on donations and fundraisers. All proceeds from the event will continue to help TNR of Warren and for the Dogs save the dogs and cats of Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

Library calls all travelers
The Poland branch of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host “Pajama Jam: Sleepy-Time for the Family” on Sept. 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The library encourages the whole family to put on pajamas and come honor top readers for Summer Reading 2011 with stories and fun.

Bulldog Turf Club donates to food pantry
The Bulldog Turf Club and friends donated $700 worth of food to the Poland Inter Faith Food Pantry on Aug. 3. The pantry is housed at the Poland Methodist Church and is sponsored by Poland’s four largest churches: Poland Methodist, Poland Presbyterian, Prince of Peace and Holy Family.
In order to make the donation, members and friends of the club made personal cash donations. Turf club members and friends then went shopping, purchased and delivered the food. No Turf club funds were used in this project.
“This is the third time that members and friends of The Bulldog Turf Club have made a donation to the food pantry. The food pantry is a great community resource and we are proud to support it,” said Turf Club Chairman Bob Richards, Jr. “We are honored to provide this community service. We will continue our efforts for the Pantry for as long as we can.”

Meetings set for LPDC
The Poland Local Professional Committee will meet in 2012, on Jan. 19 at 3:15 p.m., March 22 at 3:15 p.m. and May 17 at 3:15 p.m. at Poland Middle School.
The purpose of the committee is to review and approve course work and CEU’s to be completed by educators within the district.

Daughters Revolution elects new officers
The Mahoning Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met June 13 at Ala Cart Catering in Canfield for the special purpose of installing new officers for the 2011-2013 term of office.
The new officers elected May 9 are Regent: Mary Altiere, Vice Regent: Milly Lumley, Chaplain: Priscilla Sutton, Recording Secretary: Rolayne Kasmer, Corresponding Secretary: Barbara Parker, Treasurer: Frances Stoner, Registrar: Nancy Lewis, Librarian/Historian: Bonnie Casto and Board members: Carol Tallman, Sarah Reynolds and Mary Lou Shively.
The chapter meets the second Monday of each month except in January, July and August.
The next meeting will be Monday at Ala Cart Catering at noon.
