NARFE Chapter 14 will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road.

Pooch Pentathlon planned at YMCA

The D.D. & Velma Davis Family YMCA will open its doors for the annual Pooch Pentathlon on Sunday.

Gates will open at 12:30 for a day of events for dogs and their owners.

Events will begin at 1 p.m.

Dogs and owners can take part in five events showcasing their swimming, agility and obedience skills.

Events include Leap Dog, Fetch, Doggie Paddle, Treasure Dive and the Agility Course.

The event is open to Y members and the community.

Registration is $10, and it includes a “doggie bag.”

All dogs must have proof of rabies vaccination before entering.

Pet Food Pantry lends hand to Angels

Helping Paws Pet Food Pantry, a division of Athena Animal Advocacy Group, has donated about $150 pounds of pet food to Angels for Animals to help with the recent hoarding and neglect cases that have sent an increased number of abused animals to Angels’ shelter.

Chili cook-off set at Beeghly Oaks

Beeghly Oaks Nursing & Rehab Center is hosting its third annual chili cook-off to benefit the American Heart Association from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the center, 6505 Market St., behind Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley.

A sample of each participant’s chili to taste and judge, plus a bowl of your favorite with your choice of toppings, will cost $5.

Refreshments also will be served.

Tickets will be available for a 50-50 drawing, as well as a basket auction.

‘Recess’ to benefit Sojourner House

YOUNGSTOWN

Compass Family and Community Services will sponsor “Recess — An Evening to Play Like a Kid and Party Like an Adult!” from 7 to 10 p.m. Sept. 24 at Oh Wow! Children’s Center for Science and Technology, 11 W. Federal St.

This party for adult “kids” 21 and older will benefit victims of domestic violence through the Sojourner House program and shelter.

Those attending are asked to dress casually for play and dance — no heels or ties.

Attendees will play and compete with the exhibits, eat tasty appetizers and desserts and have adult beverages while dancing to tunes spun by Fever DJs.

Tickets are $40 and will include soft drinks, beer, wine and food.

Reservations are requested by Monday.
