The Canfield High School Cardinal Pride Marching Band, along with five other Valley bands, kicked off the fall band season as part of the 37th annual Show of Bands on Aug. 30 at the stadium.
The show featured bands from Austintown, Boardman, Poland, Struthers and West Branch, along with Canfield.
“It was probably the best [show]. We had great weather, the stadium was packed and all of the bands performed superbly,” said associate director James Volenik, who works alongside head director Michael Kelly, Jr and fellow associate director Marc Pupino.
The Cardinals theme of the year is “Fight Club” and the slogan is “Live to fight another day.”
Canfield started the show with the football cheerleaders and performed “Hang on Sloopy,” as well as Canfield High School’s alma mater.
Struthers took the field next with a patriotic performance that featured classic American music. West Branch performed next, then Austintown with a performance commemorating the Sept. 11 attacks. Poland and Boardman played afterward.
Finally, Canfield took the field again to close the show. With choreography from the flag line and music from the band, the Cardinals performed songs like “War” from Avatar, “Back in Black,” “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Kung Fu Fighting.”
Junior Drum Major Hayley Ward and senior Drum Major Spencer Saylor directed the last two songs on the list. In high school bands, student drum majors act as directors and lead their bands in certain pieces.
“I thought everyone did a fantastic job,” said Ward, “Everyone did really well. It was cool to see all the different bands. They all have something special that makes them fun to watch.”
