Health scare at VXI called ‘nonsense’

YOUNGSTOWN

Rumors of a medical outbreak among VXI Global Solutions employees are “out of control” and not true, said the city health department’s nursing director.

The department received about 50 calls Wednesday and Thursday from VXI workers asking about a health scare at the call center, said Melissa Novits, the health department’s nursing director.

It appears the health issue is two employees with potential staph infections, she said. Both were tested, and the results weren’t available Thursday, she said.

But even if there are two VXI workers with staph infections, that’s not uncommon in a business the size of the call center, Novits said. There are about 1,000 workers at VXI’s location on the fourth and fifth floors of 20 Federal Place, 20 W. Federal St.

“They’re very common,” she said of staph.

The city and Mahoning County health departments are investigating, but Novits said there’s no serious health outbreak at VXI.

“It’s a whole bunch of nonsense right now,” she said. “This is rumor. That’s all it is.”

The city health department has received calls Wednesday and Thursday from about 50 VXI workers about various health scares there for medical issues far more serious than staph, Novits said. But there is nothing to worry about, she said.

VXI officials couldn’t be reached Thursday by The Vindicator to comment.
