Alliance Community Hospital will offer “Fresh Start,” a free, three-week smoking- cessation program, in Conference Room 1-B on the hospital’s first floor. The program takes place on three consecutive Thursday evenings from 6 to 7 p.m. beginning Sept. 15. Smoking-cessation patches are not being offered as part of the program.

Survivorship Day celebrates success

ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital and the TMH Foundation, in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, will sponsor the 22nd annual Cancer Survivorship Day from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lincoln School, 2253 Atlantic Street NE. Survivorship Day is a way to celebrate success in the fight against cancer. The event is free.

The afternoon celebration features jazz music by local music therapist and jazz recording artist Teddy Pantelas, a presentation by local physician Dr. Robert Brodell and patient testimonials.

Cancer survivors, family members and friends are encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is not required but appreciated. To pre-register for the event, call the American Cancer Society at 1-888-227-6446, ext. 2104.

Sickle-cell program at Akron Children’s

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley now offers a sickle-cell program for pediatric patients living with the disease in the Mahoning Valley.

The program’s overall goal is to improve the lives of those affected by or at risk for hemoglobin disorders, said Jeffrey Hord, director of Akron Children’s Mahoning Valley Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders Center.

The program is responsible for the subspecialty care of more than 200 children, adolescents and young adults in Northeast Ohio who have sickle-cell disease.

Sickle-cell anemia is an inherited disorder of the hemoglobin, a protein in the red blood cells, which may cause the red cells to take an abnormal shape and interrupt the blood supply to various parts of the body.

Open house planned at Urgent Care

Hermitage, pa.

UPMC Urgent Care, located in the Hermitage Crossing Plaza on Route 18, will host a community open house from 3 to 6 p.m. next Thursday.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony with the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce will take place at 3:15 p.m.

The full-service, walk-in clinic is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week and offers immediate care for a variety of illnesses and injuries as well as physicals, flu shots, and onsite X-ray and laboratory services. A physician is on site at all times.

The “Original” Visiting Nurse Association will give flu shots at their office, 518 E. Indianola Ave., corner of South and Indianola avenues, on Tuesday.
