Sheriff: Fight led to fatal beating on Ohio island

PUT-IN-BAY, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a Cleveland-area man beaten to death on a Lake Erie resort island and the man charged in his murder both had training in mixed martial arts.

Investigators tell the Sandusky Register the two men got into an argument at a party in Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island.

Zachary Brody of Bowling Green was in court today, charged with murder, voluntary manslaughter and felonious assault.

Ottawa County Sheriff Bob Bratton says the men met at a party near where the victim, 25-year-old Phil Masterson of Westlake, was spending the Labor Day weekend.

Masterson’s relatives found his body Tuesday. Friends say he had won his first amateur fight in July.

The 27-year-old Brody is jailed on a $750,000 bond.
