Sports Digest || McGlynn, Ross and McCarthy sign
Staff/wire reports
Mike McGlynn didn’t have to wait long to latch on to another NFL team.
The Austintown Fitch High School graduate was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday despite starting all 16 games for them in 2010.
On Sunday, McGlynn was awarded on waivers to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens and St. Louis Rams also put in bids for McGlynn, but the Bengals had the highest waiver claim, No. 4.
Two other players who were cut on Saturday re-signed with those teams’ practice squads on Sunday — Kyle McCarthy (Cardinal Mooney) with the Denver Broncos, and Brandian Ross (Youngstown State) with the Green Bay Packers.
Browns
CLEVELAND
Concerned by injuries depleting depth at some spots, Cleveland claimed linebacker Quinton Spears from Miami, defensive tackle Emmanuel Stephens from Atlanta and quarterback Thaddeus Lewis from St. Louis.
Lewis’ availability caused the Browns to change course from carrying only starter Colt McCoy and veteran Seneca Wallace at quarterback.
Lewis set school records as a four-year starter at Duke, throwing for 10,065 yards and 67 touchdowns.
General manager Tom Heckert is continuing to look for help on the offensive line, where starting left guard Eric Steinbach is out for the season after having back surgery Tuesday. Rookie Jason Pinkston is in line to start the opener against the Bengals.
Steelers
PITTSBURGH
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, linebacker James Farrior and wide receivers Hines Ward and Arnaz Battle were selected captains .
This is the eighth straight year Farrior has been a defensive captain and the seventh straight year Ward has been elected offensive co-captain. Roethlisberger served as a co-captain in 2008 and 2009. Battle will captain the special teams after making the Steelers as the team’s sixth receiver.
