Sept. 11 services
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States. The 9/11 Memorial will be dedicated Sept. 11 in a ceremony for victims’ families. The Memorial Museum, located at the World Trade Center site, houses a collection of artifacts, stories, photos, videos and other material pertinent to the event. The Flight 93 National Memorial will be dedicated next Saturday, with the Memorial Plaza and Field of Honor as the first features to be completed. It will be open to the public after the ceremony. The Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Va., is designed so that the nation may remember and reflect.
In the Mahoning Valley, services are planned. Events are Sept. 11, unless otherwise noted.
Mahoning Valley Association of Churches: A Mahoning Valley Prayer for Reconciliation service is scheduled at 2 p.m. at Butler North, (formerly First Christian Church), located next to Butler Institute of American Art, Wick Avenue, Youngstown. Prayers will be offered by Julie Thomas, coordinator of the Manjushri Study Group, a foundation for the preservation of the Mahayana Tradition; Rabbi Daria Jacobs-Velde of Congregation Ohev Tzedek in Boardman; Walid Abuasi, Imam, The Islamic Society of Greater Youngstown; and the Rev. Bob Bonnot, Christ Our Savior Church in Struthers, MVAC president. Cary Dabney, leader of Youngstown State University’s chapter of Interfaith Youth Core, will speak. Music will be by the Youngstown Connection. Light refreshments will be served. A free-will offering will be taken to benefit the Interfaith Youth Core. Suggested parking is at Lot F1 of YSU, Butler North Wick Avenue and Spring Street.
Beulah Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., Youngstown: A memorial service will be at 4 p.m.with guest speaker, the Rev. Walter Gillespie of the Church of Faith.
Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., Canfield: Worship service will be at 10 a.m., then members will have a Service Day to help others. Participants from the community are welcome. The Christian Education committee wanted to incorporate mission and service for the Sunday School kickoff on such a revered day as 9/11. Service activities include delivering cookies to fireman, policeman, neighbors, shut-ins; making greeting cards for members of the armed forces; passing out water bottles on bike trails for walkers and bicyclists; washing windows at gas stations; and cleaning up trash along neighborhood sidewalks and village green in Canfield. First Church of Christ, 20 W. Martin St., East Palestine: A remembrance service is planned at 9 a.m. to recall the events of 9/11, honor those who serve and pray for God’s guidance and blessing on the nation. Refreshments and fellowship will be at 9:30 followed by the regular worship service at 10.
First Presbyterian Church of Warren, 256 Mahoning Ave., Warren: A Concert of Hope is planned at 5 p.m. next Saturday at the church. The free event will highlight songs of remembrance, inspiration and courage along with multimedia pieces, readings and prayers for peace.
St. Patrick Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., Youngstown: As part of its 100-year anniversary, the church will mark the 10-year
anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy at the
10 a.m. Mass. Members of Youngstown Police and Fire Department Honor Guards and representatives of the 910th Airwing Honor Guard will lead the processional into Mass. Representatives of the Bazetta Fire Department and a beam that they recently received from the Trade Center wreckage will be on display.

Memorial Concert is planned at 2 p.m. featuring the Faure Requiem, Community Choir, Chamber Orchestra, soloists Andrew Sords, Kayla Wilson, Colleen McNally Harris, David Pratt and Max Pivik and conductor Adam Zagotti. The concert is free.
Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road, Canfield: To mark the somber anniversary of the terrorist attacks 10 years ago, a labyrinth walk will be at 2 p.m. The path is handicapped accessible. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk.
Washington National Cathedral, Washington, D.C.: A Call to Compassion is the theme of a three-day observance at the National Cathedral. Visit www.calltocompassion.com to share your story, prayer or remembrance. On Friday, the cathedral will host A Concert of Honor at 7:30 p.m. and a Concert to Heal will be at 1 p.m. next Saturday. An interfaith prayer vigil is set for 8:30 a.m. Sept. 11.
