HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, a United Way Agency, is the local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement, and management for people of all ages and abilities in the Mahoning Valley located at Youngstown State University, second floor of the Williamson School of Business in the Center for Non-profit Excellence and our main office, 5500 Market St., Suite 110, Boardman. Hands On is a monthly column that serves to communicate the impact that volunteering can have on our community. OPPORTUNITIES
Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education: Leading Forward is a mentorship program designed to transform the lives of students, with a unique approach to college preparedness. Five mentors are needed to support students in achieving academic success and preparing them for the transition from high school to college. Volunteers must have a college degree and be available two hours per week Saturdays from September through May.
Ursuline Sisters HIV/AIDS Ministry: If you’d like to make a difference in the life of a child, consider tutoring/mentoring during after-school hours. Tutors provide educational enrichment to children one on one or in small groups 2 to 6 hours per week. Volunteers must have a high-school diploma and the ability to work well with children.
HOVN Ambassador: The HOVN Ambassadors are responsible for meeting and greeting guests, answering phone calls, assisting prospective volunteers with information, and support staff with occasional clerical needs.
HandsOn Connect Lead Volunteers: Are you a media/tech junkie? HOVN has opportunities for people who understand software implementation to join our team as volunteer mentors as we launch a new online database called HandsOn Connect.
Stop One Place Help Is Available Inc.: Volunteer needed with new and innovative ideas and contacts for fundraising activities. We need to have events that will net us at least $1,000 per event. The volunteer needs to have the ability to recruit workers and serve as chairman or chairwoman of the events. These fundraisers will benefit our Direct Monetary Assistance program to help the needy of Trumbull County with needs such as utility shutoffs, non-narcotic prescriptions and eyeglasses.
Junior Achievement of the Mahoning Valley: Volunteers are needed for one-time opportunities and long-term opportunities. One-time opportunities require one visit to the classroom and long-term opportunities require five to seven visits, 45 minutes each, to the classroom during the school year.
Join RSVP – Lead with Experience: If you are age 55 or older, we want you for service opportunities working with feeding people, disaster services and training and veterans’ issues. Call Marlene Braunlich at 330-782-5877 or email mbraunlich@hovn.org.
RSVP Reading Buddies: RSVP is orienting new volunteers to the Reading Buddies program in the Youngstown City Schools for the 2011-12 school year. Volunteers need to possess patience and understanding as well as commit to regular schedule of working with elementary-age children in helping them develop strong reading and comprehension skills. Episodic Opportunities: The Raymond John Wean Foundation Annual Nonprofit Summit needs assistance during the summit on Sept. 20. Shifts are available. Contact HOVN at 330-782-5877.
OH WOW!: Volunteers needed for the Silly Science in September fundraising event Sept 25. Shifts run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Contact Brittany at development@ohwowkids.org for details.

Girard Multigenerational Center: Assist the staff with their 10- year anniversary celebration Oct. 18. Volunteers will assist with decorating the center, set up and greeting guests.

Volunteers interested in participating in a service project can call the HOVN office.
Mahoning County Dog Pound: Volunteer dog walkers needed. Call HOVN. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and must sign a waiver form with ID before walking dogs, first visit only.

Youth Volunteer Corps: Volunteers needed for Canine Carnival from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 24. Students 13 through 18 are invited to join us at the second Annual Paws Town Canine Carnival. YVC volunteers will help with events like the doggy- costume contest, face painting, auction, food booths, and even the doggy-kissing booth. To participate, call Gretchen at 330-782-5877.
Bummer Fund: Volunteers needed to assist with fund’s Scavenger Hunt fundraiser Sept. 18 at The Pink Elephant, 6135 Mahoning Ave. Volunteers are needed to help with set-up registration, serve luncheon and other duties. The Bummer Fund, a local 501(c)(3), provides financial assistance for responsible pet owners in times of temporary medical crisis or emergency for a pet.
