Attendance nears 100,000 for 3 days

Canfield

Friday’s attendance at the 165th Canfield Fair was 2,118 more than the same day in 2010, thanks to sunshine and hot weather.

A total of 40,528 people came through the gates on the third day of the 165th Canfield Fair, said Timm Schreiber, fair board member. In 2010, 38,410 attended on Friday.

Three solid days in a row brings the total attendance through Friday to 99,423. In 2010, the three-day attendance was 96,514.

Schreiber said Saturday was shaping up to be another strong- attendance day, and by noon the number of fairgoers was up from last year.

Extreme heat brings more medical calls

Canfield

A spike in the temperature caused a spike in medical calls Friday at the fairgrounds.

Andy Frost, fair board member and Austintown fire chief, said the medics had 29 cart runs on Friday, most of them heat-related. He said about 13 of those treated on the grounds were then taken to the hospital.

Frost said the American Red Cross also treated about 130 people inside its building near the grandstand.

It’s important to stay hydrated and, if possible, out of the sun on hot days like Friday and Saturday, Frost said.

Temperatures are expected to cool today with highs in the low 80s today and the mid-60s on Monday.

Dem officeholders to meet, greet at fair

Canfield

Democratic elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th, will be at the Mahoning County Democratic Party’s tent at the Canfield Fair on Boardman Street, near the grandstand, from 1 to 3 p.m. today.

“We came up with an idea to highlight one day where most of the elected officials in Mahoning County will be at one place and at one time to allow the voters to see and talk to them about concerns,” said party Chairman David Betras. “Most of the elected officials from Tim Ryan to the council persons in the smallest cities and township trustees have made a commitment” to be there, Betras said.
