Total attendance increases over first two days to 58,895
Canfield
The two-day attendance total for Wednesday and Thursday at the 165th Canfield Fair is up about 800 people from 2010.
Timm Schreiber, fair board member, said a good crowd Wednesday and an influx of people Thursday evening helped bump up the numbers.
The two-day total is 58,895. Thursday’s total was 34,202, which is down slightly from 35,261 in 2010.
Schreiber said rain early Thursday kept crowds at bay until about 5 p.m.
“We were down big time going into 4 p.m.,” he said. “Then they came in really heavy.”
Local man raises funds to help finance surgery
CANFIELD
Ed Port, 41, of Austintown, is at the Canfield Fair, raising donations and awareness.
Port suffers from neurofibromatosis Type 2, a genetic disorder that causes large tumors on his face. His booth is on Canfield Drive, next to the K-105 FM booth at the fairgrounds.
He’s selling T-shirts and wristbands to raise money for the surgeries he needs as well as answering fairgoers questions about NF2 and his struggle. Port had one surgery performed by a Chicago plastic surgeon in June when most of the tumors were removed.
He returns to Chicago Sept. 12 to meet with the same surgeon to determine when his next surgery will be scheduled.
The next surgery, likely to occur in October or November, will involve removing the remaining tumors near his left ear and neck, raising his left ear, which had been pushed down by the tumors and replacing the portions of his left jaw removed in a long-ago surgery.
“People have been coming up to me and telling me they’re glad to see me and that they’ve been following my story in The Vindicator since the beginning,” Port said.
He’ll be at the fair through Monday.

Junior Fair market sales up significantly
Canfield
Sales for the Junior Fair market lamb and swine increased significantly over last year’s sale.
Ward Campbell, fair board member, said Thursday’s sales were possibly the best the fair has ever had.
The grand champion lamb was sold for $15.25 per pound, and the grand champion hog was sold for $11.50 per pound, he said.
Campbell said the hog sales totaled $258 per pound and the lamb sales totalled $499 per pound. Last year’s average sales were $284 per pound, he said.
“We’ve already made $30,000 more this year than last year,” Campbell said.
