Struthers cop to spend less time at school

A city police officer who is assigned to the schools spent the first week of classes in the district but will now be there just two days a week.

Police Chief Tim Roddy said he will make officer D.J. Aldish available Wednesdays and Thursdays, though those days can change as Aldish sees fit.

A grant the city received two years ago to fund Aldish in the schools is running out of money. He had been there full-time until this year, but Roddy said he will be scheduled for two days a week “until further notice.”

The school board is considering how to keep Aldish on full time, with members saying they believe he is a valuable resource.

Roddy said the city will try to find more grants to fund his position.

At its August meeting, the school board considered hiring Aldish for five hours a week the other three days, which would be a side job for him, Roddy said. The board did not make a decision.
