From July 26-28, local Girl Scouts learned about history from their American peers throughout the ages.
In a program hosted at Austintown Township Park and aiming to teach girls from kindergarten to sixth grade, scouts participated in arts, crafts, recipes, and fashion inspired by the journals of girls throughout American history.
“Our camp is all about getting our girls to appreciate history and understand what girls their age in America may have experienced,” shared camp leader Tammy Bigley.
Local troops participating in the event included girls from Austintown, Canfield, Boardman and Poland, and Cleveland-area councils from as far away as Avon Lake.
Each day, the girls explored a different time period in American history, from the journey on the Mayflower to the start of World War II and many periods in between.
During a discussion on the start of the Great Depression in 1932, the girls made bandana dolls, a simple toy that struggling families at the time were able to afford.
Although lunch was served during each day’s festivities, the girls had a part in making many of their own snacks. The scouts made homemade noodles, peanut butter cookies and banana boats for ice cream sundaes throughout their camp experience.
“I hope the girls see what other generations gave up so that they can enjoy the lives they have now. This hands-on participation really helps them understand the serious stuff,” Bigley said during the event.
The girls at Austintown Township Park couldn’t quite decide their favorite moment of camp.
“The best part has been making the dolls. But the cooking is really fun, too,” said Girl Scout Zoe Bailey.
“The best part of camp is everything,” said camper Abby Brown.
