Seventh-grade football squad opens with win
The Poland seventh-grade football team opened the 2011 season with a 20-6 win over Hubbard.
The victory was keyed by a strong defensive performance, as the Bulldogs returned two interceptions for touchdowns and allowed just one score.
Joey Lawman and Tony Chiaro led Poland on both sides of the football, combining for all three touchdowns. Lawman hauled in an 80-yard touchdown pass from Chiaro.
Both Lawman and Chiaro scored on defense via interception returns.
The entire defensive line was commended for an outstanding performance.
PMS eighth-graders score early and often
The Poland Middle School eighth-grade football team scored on the game’s opening play and never looked back, earning a 32-8 win over Hubbard.
Quarterback Nick Buccieri connected with Jacob Wardle for a 65-yard scoring toss on the first play of the contest to set the tone.
The offense was dominate, especially on the ground, as the Bulldogs scored four rushing touchdowns. The offensive line of Evan Montgomery, Jacob Fredrick, Ethan Montcilovich and Jacob Burns paved the way for scoring runs by
Buccieri, Anthony Audi, Dylan Garver and Matt Duran.
Defensively, Buccieri had an interception and linebackers Audi and Garver turned in in big performances.
Freshman Bulldogs win
The Poland freshman squad beat Hubbard 28-13.
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Dom Patrone, Austin Wilson and Marlon Ramirez.
Poland JV team tops Hubbard
The Poland junior varsity team scored on the ground, through the air and on special teams to earn a 34-14 triumph over the Eagles.
Jacob Wolfe threw for a TD pass and added a rushing score. Jon Markota hauled in a scoring toss, Jake Aiello had a 30-yard scoring run, Tad Duran scored from 34 yards out and Jason Morucci had a kickoff return for a score.
Strong defensive performances were turned in by Nick Rizzo, Abe Kassem and Jake Moffo.
Poland varsity rallies to top Hubbard
Poland running back Jerry Lawman rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns to led the Bulldogs to a 37-31 victory over Hubbard Aug. 25.
The Bulldogs saw a 30-18 fourth quarter lead cut to six points by a Hubbard rally. But Poland converted on a key third-and-12 at the Hubbard 34 to set up a 5-yard TD run by Lawman to secure the victory.
Little Bulldogs begin season with win, losses
The Poland Little Bulldogs won one of three games against the Canfield Little Cards to open the 2011 season.
The 95-pound squad were dominate on both sides of the ball, beating Canfield 24-0.
In the 120-pound tilt, Poland trailed just 6-2 at halftime, but surrendered two second half touchdowns to fall 20-2.
The 140-pounders were tied 8-8, but were outscored 22-6 the rest of the way en route to a 30-14 setback.
