Canfield graduate receives Masters
Cara Laine Graneto recently received her Master of Science in Child Development from Erikson Institute in Chicago. She also sat for her Child Life Specialist Exam in May and was awarded certification. Graneto has accepted a position at the Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital in Connecticut in their Child Life Department. She will be working in the Pediatric Respiratory Care Unit, Newborn Special Care Unit and the Neurosciences Unit. Graneto received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from John Carroll University and was a 2005 Graduate of Canfield High School.
Historical society hosts lecture series
The Canfield Historical Society will kick off its Fall Lecture Series with a lecture by Herman Pipe titled “Native Americans in the U.S. Today,” Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Pipe, originally from Montana, where he is an enrolled tribal member, has been living in the area for approximately nine years.
He works for the Ohio Education Association and also serves on YSU’s Community Diversity Committee. Pipe’s lecture will include a question-and-answer session, refreshments and is appropriate for all ages.
Other lectures in the series include a presentation by Sis Soller on Erma Bombeck slated for Oct. 13 and Tim Brookes’ lecture on Pretty Boy Floyd on Nov. 10. Lectures take place at the Canfield Historical Society’s Bond House, located at 44 W. Main St., Canfield, across from the Canfield library. All lectures are free and open to the public. Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA meets Sept. 13
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA will hold its meeting at A La Cart in Canfield on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will begin with a dinner of Swiss steak, twice-baked potato, green beans, salad and apple dumplings.

Singers needed for Fair church service
As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair, singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service.
A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Adrienne Lesnett.
Hospice volunteer class begins Sept. 12
Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class begins Sept. 12 in the Hospice House conference room. Classes are from noon to 3 p.m. every Monday through Oct. 17. Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for the patients and their family and how volunteers fit into that team.
Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways, including being companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes and helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed.

Pancake breakfast helps animal rescue organizations
TNR of Warren and For the Dogs Animal Rescue will sponsor a pancake breakfast on Sept. 17 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Packard Park Indoor Shelter House, 1703 Mahoning Ave. in Warren.
Cost is $7 per person for all-you-can-eat-pancakes served with sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee.
Tickets are available in advance or at the door. In addition to the breakfast, tickets will be available for a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction.
Both groups are nonprofit, volunteer-based and rely solely on donations and fundraisers. All proceeds from the event will continue to help TNR of Warren and for the Dogs save the dogs and cats of Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

Fall fashion preview set
The Network Council of Mahoning Valley of ABWA will sponsor its 22nd annual Fall Fashion Preview on Sept. 25 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and lunch will be at 2 p.m.
Cody of Shooting Start, Nashville, will be the entertainment for the evening. There will also be a raffle of a 32-inch flat screen TV, Split the Pot and a Chinese auction.

This program includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help children become successful readers. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Library teaches toddlers rhythm and motion
The Canfield branch of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host “Baby Brilliant: Rhythm and Motion” for 2 and 3-year-olds on Sept. 21 at 10 a.m.
The program includes a variety of music, dance, song and special activities including the use of props, musical instruments and imagination guaranteed to appeal to the young and restless. Child must be accompanied by an adult.

Performing Arts Center relocates to Canfield
The Performing Arts Center is relocating to Canfield. PAC, a competitive studio turning out numerous professional dancers, teachers and choreographers, is moving to its new location at 4478 Boardman-Canfield Rd. Suite C.
The center is going on 28 years of teaching the most innovative, up-to-date styles of dance. They also offer the instruction in voice and piano.

‘Tales to Tails’ at the library
The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County encourages school-age children to sign up to read to a registered therapy dog on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m.
Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome to bring a book of their choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs. Sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library.
Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors
Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.
Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.
During this national promotion, through Monday. IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded soldiers.
Canfield native magna cum laude at John Carroll
Amanda Hardy, Canfield Class of 2007, graduated from John Carroll University, magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She will pursue her master’s in Anesthesia at Case Western Reserve University.
She is the daughter of David and Traci Hardy.
Library contest set for September
The library is holding a Guess ‘N’ Go — Do You Know? contest for children of all ages during library hours the whole month of September. Guess how many school items are in the jar and you may win a prize.
Garden club hosts horticultural show
The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown will host its 47th annual horticultural show today and tomorrow at Fellows Riverside Gardens. This show is free and open to the public.

Church to host outdoor movie nights
Canfield Christian Church is hosting a series of movie nights throughout the next several months.
The scheduled movies and dates are: “Secretariat” (Sept. 16), “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry” (Oct. 21).
The movies will be shown outside and start at dusk. Social hour with games starts an hour before. There will be free popcorn and drinks, but guests must provide their own blankets and lawn chairs. For information, call the church at 330-533-2246.
