Boardman grad earns scholarship

Lindsay Basile, daughter of Megann and Michael Basile, was one of five winners of the Lamar Advertising Company’s President’s Scholarship. The scholarship program began in 1995 and is available for the children of Lamar employees in each location.

Basile, who graduated from Boardman in 2010, is majoring in Exercise Science at Youngstown State University.

Her extracurricular activities include Honors Program at Youngstown State University, Emerging Leaders, Diabetes Walk and Future Physical Therapy Club. She also volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club.

Singers needed for Canfield Fair church service

As has occurred for many years, on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair, singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service.

A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service.

Participants will be reimbursed their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Adrienne Lesnett.

Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA meets Sept. 13

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA will hold its meeting at A La Cart in Canfield on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

The meeting will begin with a dinner of Swiss steak, twice-baked potato, green beans, salad and apple dumplings.

The cost is $16. The deadline for reservations is Thursday.

Fall fashion preview set

The Network Council of Mahoning Valley of ABWA will sponsor its 22nd annual Fall Fashion Preview on Sept. 25 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. and lunch will be at 2 p.m.

Cody of Shooting Start, Nashville, will be the entertainment for the evening. There will also be a raffle of a 32-inch flat screen TV, Split the Pot and a Chinese auction.

Hospice volunteer class begins Sept. 12

Hospice of the Valley’s new volunteer class begins Sept. 12 in the Hospice House conference room. Classes are from noon to 3 p.m. every Monday through Oct. 17. Volunteers will learn what Hospice of the Valley’s team of doctors, nurses, social workers and chaplains do for the patients and their family and how volunteers fit into that team.

Hospice volunteers serve in a variety of ways, including being companions for hospice patients at home or in nursing homes and helping at the Hospice House inpatient facility. New volunteers are needed.

Mickey Schuster Scholarship dinner set

Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Dr., Boardman will host its semiannual Mickey Schuster Scholarship Spaghetti Dinner on Sept. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. Cost is $6.50 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Tickets are available at the door or by calling the church office at 330-758-5745. The dinner includes salad, bread, pasta with meatballs, dessert and drink. Takeouts are available.

All proceeds go to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund and are distributed each year to college students at Bethel.

Farmers insurance agent completes course

Felicia Davis, Farmers Insurance agent, completed the Career Agents Course at the University of Farmers, located in Agoura Hills, Calif. on Aug. 8.

Davis completed the five-day course, which Annette Thompson, senior vice president of Farmers’ describes as targeted to enhance the professional skills of Farmers’ agents. The course gives an agent the ability to learn how to successfully understand the needs of Farmers’ customers and help them choose the right insurance to meet their needs.

Breakfast helps animal rescue organizations

TNR of Warren and For the Dogs Animal Rescue will sponsor a pancake breakfast on Sept. 17 from 8 to 11 a.m. at Packard Park Indoor Shelter House, 1703 Mahoning Ave. in Warren.

Cost is $7 per person for all-you-can-eat-pancakes served with sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee. Tickets are available in advance or at the door. In addition to the breakfast, tickets will be available for a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction.

Both groups are nonprofit, volunteer-based and rely solely on donations and fundraisers. All proceeds from the event will continue to help TNR of Warren and for the Dogs save the dogs and cats of Trumbull and Mahoning counties.

Library calls all travelers to Hawaii

The Boardman branch of Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host “Calling All Travelers to Hawaii” on Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.

The program will honor top readers for Summer Reading 2011 with a luau. The whole family can participate in a lei craft and enjoy a frozen treat.

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors

Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.

Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers. During this national promotion, through Monday, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.

Family tours are back at the farm

Every Thursday at 10 a.m. throughout the summer families can join MetroParks Farm for a 60-70 minute guided tractor-wagon tour of the facility.

Adviser earns prestigious award

Edward Jones financial adviser Valerie D’Apolito, of Boardman, recently received the Jack Phelan Blue Blazer Award for her outstanding business building skills and client service efforts over the past year.

Only 218 of the firm’s more than 12,000 financial advisers received the Jack Phelan Blue Blazer Award. D’Apolito was one of only 1,869 financial advisers out of more than 12,000 to receive the A.F. McKenzie Achievement Award.
