US House Speaker in Ohio, calls economy ‘stagnant’

WEST CHESTER, Ohio (AP) — U.S. House Speaker John Boehner says the latest jobs report shows that the nation’s economy is “stagnant” and that he hopes President Barack Obama and other Democrats will listen to Republican ideas.

Boehner said in Ohio today that he’s looking forward to hearing Obama’s plan for job creation but that stimulus spending, “short term gimmicks” and more regulations won’t work.

Boehner supports a House Republican approach focused on reducing government spending and regulations and lowering tax rates.

He spoke at the ribbon cutting for the new offices of a private company that provides payroll and other business services in his home area near Cincinnati.

Today’s Labor Department report showed the U.S. unemployment rate remained at 9.1 percent as employers added no net workers in August.
