Attorney Bill Culbertson, estate planning attorney, will present information on current planned giving trends and other topics for area nonprofit organizations at a luncheon offered by the Mahoning/Shenango Planned Giving Council. The event is from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Youngstown Club, 201 East Commerce St. The deadline for reservations, which are $15 for PGC members and $20 for nonmembers, is Sept. 9. Culbertson also will discuss legislative actions affecting philanthropy and the difference between a “not-for-profit” organization and a “tax-exempt” organization, along with various 501(c) categories.
Seeking photos

To celebrate, Grandparents Day, Sept. 11, the Ohio Department of Aging is asking Ohioans to submit photos of grandparents and grandchildren sharing and learning about the events and people that made their families and their communities strong via the agency’s page on Facebook. Through Sept. 7, Ohioans of any age can visit www.facebook.com/Ohio-DepartmentOfAging and post photos to the department’s wall that fit the theme: Grandparents — Sharing Heritage and History. Posting requires a free Facebook account, and the photos must conform to Facebook’s terms of service.
Individuals also may submit their photos no later than Sept. 8 by mail to: Ohio Department of Aging, Attn.: Communications Division, 50 W. Broad St./9th Floor, Columbus, OH 43215-3363. Photos will not be returned. Department staff will select three submissions to be featured on the agency’s website and on its Facebook page Sept. 9.
Cancer screenings

Free prostate-cancer screenings are offered to men 50 and older and African American men 45 and older from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at Grace AME Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW. The screening, sponsored by Humility of Mary Health Partners Cancer Centers and the Grace Nursing Guild, will include a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood draw and digital rectal exam (DRE) from a Partners for Urology Health physician. Joined in study
AKRON
Akron Children’s Hospital has joined a phase-three study of a potential new drug for treatment of social impairment in adolescents and adults age 12 to 25 with fragile X syndrome, the most common known cause of autism. Children age 5 to 11 with fragile X syndrome in a second study of STX209 also are being enrolled. The drug being studied is an oral selective gamma-amino butyric acid type B (GABA-B) receptor agonist developed by Seaside Therapeutics of Cambridge, Mass., the trial sponsor. The study is designed to measure the efficacy, safety and tolerability of STX209. For more information, call 330-543-5012.
