NYC Halloween Parade brings spooky to the streets

NEW YORK (AP) — The streets of New York City are crawling with spooky sights, from floating eyeballs to skeletons.

The annual Halloween Parade kicked off this evening. Anyone in costume is welcome to march in the event, which goes up lower Manhattan’s Sixth Avenue.

About 200 Occupy Wall Street demonstrators joined the marchers, wearing costumes that reflect their protest. One dressed as a pink slip, another a budget ax. They carried signs that said “stop the vampire economy” and “foreclosure is scary.”

Producing director Jeanne Fleming says it’s not unusual for the parade to touch on current events. She says it’s a microcosm of what’s going on in the world or in the city.

She says the theme this year is “I of the Beholder” and some participants are carrying eyeballs.
