YSU | News and notes

Milestone day: YSU quarterback Kurt Hess threw for 224 yards, topping 200 yards for the 11th time in his 19-game career. That puts him third on the school’s all-time list behind Ron Jaworski (12) and Tom Zetts (13). It was his sixth 200-yard game of the season, which ties the school record also held by Jaworski and Zetts.

Streak snapped: Junior RB Jamaine Cook ran 16 times for 96 yards, snapping his six-game streak of 100-yard games. Cook tied Marcus Mason (2006) for the school record in that category last week. (Cook was originally credited with 111 yards rushing but that number was corrected after the game.) Cook also went over 1,000 yards for the second straight year. He has 1,045 yards this season.

Well-prepared: Penguins coach Eric Wolford twice credited his coaching staff in the postgame press conference for getting the team ready to play. “I think enough times we don’t recognize our coaches do a good job around here,” he said. “Our coaches do a great job of getting our players ready to play and that’s starting to show up. I think our players have confidence that we’re going to give you a game plan that will have an opportunity to be successful.”

Penalty-prone: The Penguins were flagged seven times for 90 yards. One of the penalties temporarily cost the Penguins 7 points. Safety Jeremey Edwards picked off a pass with five minutes left in the second quarter and returned it 18 yards for the TD, but was flagged for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty for holding the ball out as he went in for the score. The officials brought the ball back to the 17, where Kurt Hess hit Kevin Watts for a touchdown on the ensuing play.

Defensive leaders: MLB Teven Williams had a team-best nine tackles. DT Aronde Stanton had his first career interception and LBs Ali Cheaib and John Sasson each recovered fumbles on punt returns.
