Flights to Washington memorial honor Ohio veterans
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A group that flies World War II veterans from Ohio to see war memorials in Washington plans to start accepting applications from veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/q2RhGm ) reports Honor Flight has flown 70,000 World War II veterans flown so far nationwide and is shifting to a different generation. The waiting list for the flights has dwindled as around 1,000 World War II veterans die daily.
Bobbi Richards of Honor Flight Columbus says it’s a bittersweet moment for the effort. She helped take 78 veterans on a recent Honor Flight.
They included 90-year-old Melville Swanson, a former Marine. At the World War II memorial, a boy told him veterans can help others understand the war.
Swanson replied: “I hope you never have to understand it.”
