Suicide after Tasering

NEWTON FALLS

Newton Falls police are investigating a suicide that occurred after officers Tasered a man during a domestic disturbance Friday night.

Police said a call came in around 11:30 p.m. from a hysterical woman reporting that a man with a gun was at her house at 907 Newton Drive. The woman identified the man as Dale Murray and said he was threatening to shoot them, a police report states. An officer who arrived at the scene found Murray holding a handgun to another man’s head and holding a long gun in his other hand. Officers ordered Murray to drop the guns, but said he failed to comply. The male being held by Murray was able to escape and officers again ordered Murray to drop the guns, and when he again refused, they Tasered him, the report states. The Taser had little effect, however, because Murray was wearing a heavy jacket. Murray then escaped to the garage of the home and fatally shot himself with a rifle, the report states. Murray, who was later identified as Wilbert D. Murray Jr., 52, of 314 Ophelia St., was pronounced dead at the scene.
