St. Patrick’s Church, 1420 Oak Hill Ave., will have a Blue Mass at 10 a.m. today for safety forces. Celebrants will be the Rev. Ed Noga, church pastor, and the Rev. Edward J. Neroda of St. Stanislaus. A police and firefighter honor guard will be present.

In February, before Senate Bill 5 became Issue 2, the Catholic Bishops of Ohio, including Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown, issued a statement in support of collective bargaining.

We Are Ohio will have a press conference at 11:30 a.m. at Mahoning County Board of Elections at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave., after the Mass to bring to light the Catholic teachings promoting collective bargaining and respect for the human dignity of workers.

Free hot meals today

Election forum

The 7th Ward Citizens Coalition and the West Side Citizens Coalition are sponsoring a candidates forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Fellows Riverside Gardens’ D.D. & Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center’s meeting room, 123 McKinley Ave.

Those invited to attend include candidates for the city board of education, clerk of courts and Youngstown council’s 5th Ward. Also, supporters and opponents of state Issues 2 and 3 are invited.

Want to be lifeguard?

Boardman

The D.D. & Velma Davis Family YMCA is offering lifeguard classes to area teens and young adults. The course runs from Tuesday through Nov. 22, and will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays at the McClurg Road Y.

Participants must be at least 16 by Nov. 22, pass a swim-competency test and attend every class. Those who successfully complete the course will have the opportunity to interview for a lifeguard position with the Y. Fees for the program are $200. Preschool to open

SALEM

Early Bird Leaning Center at 2870 E. State St. will have a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Wednesday. An open house and tours will follow. Refreshments will be served. The preschool center serves children ages 3 to 5.

Brookfield fruit sale

Brookfield Volunteer Fire Department, in conjunction with Local 3443 of the Professional Firefighters Association, is having its annual fruit sale.

Cost is navel oranges, 20-pound box, $15.50; red grapefruit, 20-pound box, $15; grapefruit, orange, apple combo, $23.

Call the fire station at 330-448-1000 or stop by the fire department to place orders. Orders must be received by Dec. 5 and will be delivered to the fire station around Dec. 15.

‘Pumpkin Patriots’

Boardman

Township “Pumpkin Patrols” will be out Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. passing out candy.

Boardman firefighters and police officers, with help from the Kiwanis Club, will be on the streets during trick-or-treat giving out goodies and helping any child in need.
