White to be fall color in Northeast this weekend

GLASTONBURY, Conn. (AP) — White is not the fall color many in the Northeast were hoping to see this weekend.

But a storm moving up the East Coast is expected to combine with a cold weather system. The result could range from a dusting of snow to more than 10 inches Saturday in parts of New England.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson says early snowfall records could be broken in parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts. The current October record for southern New England is 7.5 inches in Worcester in 1979.

The forecast had Hebron, Conn., hardware store owner Steve Hoffman replacing the fall fertilizer at the front of his store with bags of ice melt.

By this morning, he had already sold numerous shovels, windshield scrapers and even a roof rake.
