Police are looking for the man who tried to pry open a carwash vacuum and then pulled the machine from its stone base.

An employee of Splash and Shine Auto Bath Car Wash, 869 E. Midlothian Blvd., told officers he reviewed security footage and saw that a man tried to break into the vacuum structure about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to records.

Police said that when the man’s attempt to pry the vacuum failed, the man used his pickup truck to pull the machine from its base, damaging both the base and machine. Police said the man appeared to be in his 20s, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing a baseball cap. The truck was a dark-colored, regular-cab Dodge pickup truck with empty ladder racks, reports state.

Agency meeting

The Area Agency on Aging 11 Board of Trustees meeting is at 1:30 p.m. today at the Mahoning County Senior Center, 1110 Fifth Ave. The 18-member board has been conducting its monthly meetings at locations throughout the four counties it serves, including Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull, so that providers, consumers, elected officials and citizens have a better opportunity to attend. The board normally meets at 1 p.m. the third Friday of each month.

Contract awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners awarded the more than $1 million Riblett Road sanitary sewer-installation project to DiGioia Suburban Excavating LLC of Cleveland.

The project, awarded Thursday, will be paid for through a $492,276 Ohio Public Works Commission loan and a $570,000 federal Community Development Block Grant award, with the remainder coming from local sewer fees.

The 7,560-foot gravity sewer, which is expected to be ready for use next spring, will serve about 50 Austintown homes and flow to the Youngstown sewage treatment plant, said J. Robert Lyden, county sanitary engineer.

Driver cited

NEWTON FALLS

Police cited Brian McCarty, 27, of Garfield Street for reckless operation of a motor vehicle after he ran over his 92-year-old neighbor’s legs while backing out of his driveway at 1:28 p.m. Tuesday. McCarty told police he veered into his neighbor’s yard and hit the neighbor, who was mowing his lawn at the time. The victim refused medical attention.

Garlic workshop

Youngstown

A garlic-planting workshop will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Center for Community Empowerment, 1420 Dogwood Lane, behind the Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority office.

Gardeners of all ages are invited. The instructor will be Maurice Small, an urban farmer.

The seminar is part of Mahoning Valley City Fresh, a community-supported agriculture and gardening education program funded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Education Fund coordinated by Goodness Grows and partner nonprofits. Before the workshop, volunteers and students will plant dogwood and Cleveland Pear trees along Victor Avenue across from the Rockford Village housing development’s Wright Drive entrance.
