The Boardman Booster Club has recognized the legacy of sports in the Boardman community since 1980. family, friends and supporters gathered at the Georgetown banquet center on Oct. 16 to celebrate the 32nd class of the Boardman Athletic Hall of Fame.

The 2011 class includes a wide range of athletes from team and individual sports. The honored athletes included D.J. Durkin ‘96, honored for football; Lori Anness-Dunn ‘96, recognized for volleyball; Joel Fox ‘93, for track and cross country; Shelly Jonda ‘95, for excellence in golf; contributor Ed Lewis, who coached in football and track; Jeff Matiscik ‘91, recognized for baseball; Jolene Moschella-Ross ‘96, for basketball; Alyson Vogrin-Norris ‘96, recognized for basketball; Jason Sutton ‘90, honored for football; and Preston Tims ‘96, for football.

The Boardman Boosters also offered special recognition to the undefeated 1961 Boardman football team and honored 1975 graduate and football standout Tony Dellapenna posthumously.

Jim Fox, a former Boardman athletic director and member of the Hall of Fame selection committee, said each class of inductees goes through an intense voting process.

“The selection committee works hard to recognize team sports as well as individual achievements, and we go beyond the athletes that made the big headlines. The criteria includes only what they achieved as athletes at Boardman High School. In this district, we have 32 varsity teams encompassing girls and boys sports, so we have a wonderful diversity and volume of great athletes,” Fox shared.

“Every class of athletes is phenomenal, but this year is unique because we are honoring an entire team for the first time,” explained Boardman Booster official Bill Bonte.

“This group is an honor to recognize because they are all wonderful ambassadors for sports in Boardman. Their accomplishments stand the test of time.”
