ALF 120-pounders advance to Super Bowl

The third-seeded Austintown Little Falcons 120-pound team upset the No. 2 Labrae 18-8 last Sunday in a semifinal game at Westminister College Stadium in New Wilmington, Pa.

The Falcons (7-2) earned a Super Bowl rematch with top-seeded West Side Patriots, who defeated the Ohio Valley Crusaders 30-0 to advance. The Super Bowl games will be played at Fitch Stadium beginning at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

The Falcons avenged a regular season loss to the Vikings and hope to turn the tables on the Patriots, who beat ALF during the regular season as well as in the Super Bowl last season 12-6 in overtime.

After failing to score inside the LaBrae 1 yard-line early in the second quarter, ALF finally dented the scoreboard on its next possession. A key fourth down stop of Labrae led to a four-yard TD burst by Logan Italiano and a 6-0 Falcon lead at halftime.

Great team defense and a ball control game enabled Austintown to keep control in the second half. Andrew Bretsik scampered for a 45-yard run and Steven Woodberry capped the Falcons scoring wih a 70-yard sprint to paydirt in the fourth quarter.

Daniel Ifft, Christopher Scott, Melvin Neail, Bryce Revis, Cedric Ross, Eric Shipsky, Matthew Ferree, Nicholas Hall, Warren Harris and Donovan Jones all came up big in the contest.

“Work ethic and family attitude were the keys to the victory,” said coach Antonio Page. “If we continue our hard work and stick together, we have a chance to win that Super Bowl.“
