Woman gives birth in Pa. county jail
GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) — The grandmother of a baby born at a county jail in western Pennsylvania is questioning why the mother wasn’t taken to the hospital — but the warden says the woman was brought back after doctors said she wasn’t in labor.
Westmoreland County Prison Warden John Walton tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that 25-year-old Nicole Bianco was “nine months pregnant” when she was jailed on Friday for testing positive for drugs while on probation.
Bianco’s mother, 66-year-old Kathleen Dechicchis says she’s upset her daughter wasn’t taken to a hospital on Sunday. Dechicchis is raising Bianco’s two older children and plans to help raise the newborn, Caleb.
But Walton says jail officers took her to a local hospital on Saturday before doctors sent her back to the jail, where two nurses delivered the child.
