West Branch theater tackles ‘Sweeney Todd’

West Branch High School will follow up its blockbuster spring production of “The Phantom of the Opera” with another challenging musical: “Sweeney Todd.”

Debuting on Broadway in 1979, “Sweeney Todd” tells the story of Benjamin Barker, a London barber who returns home to take revenge on a judge who did him wrong. It was turned into a major film starring Johnny Depp in 2007.

Macabre, humorous and adult in nature, “Sweeney Todd” is demanding for any cast.

“I hope people look past the plot and see the talent of our students because this show has been even more challenging than last spring’s production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’,” said John Zamarelli, director of the West Branch production.

“Sondheim is so difficult,” said Bill Ambert, vocal coach for the show. “Teaching the kids all the music and the notes was the biggest challenge.”

Building the complex set, and making mid-19th century costumes were other challenges, said Zamarelli.

Few high schools would consider taking on “Sweeney Todd,” but West Branch likes to aim high.

“It has been a rigorous feat that the students have embraced willingly,” said Zamarelli. “They’ve handled the production with a great deal of professionalism.”

The title role is bring played by senior Evan Park. Morgan Zamarelli, a junior, plays the verbose Mrs. Lovett, Sweeney’s partner in crime.

The other main roles will be handled by Cody Beegle, Leah Stahl, Ben Siglow, Eric Briggs, Amber Adams, Cody Raga, Matt Truex, Trevor Gibbons.

“Sweeney Todd” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday; and 7:30 p.m. Monday; at West Branch Auditorium, 14277 Main St.

Tickets are $10 ($8 for students). All seating is reserved.
