Former nursery finally being demolished

A longtime township eyesore is coming down.
Zoning Inspector Anna Mamone said she received confirmation that Beck & Co. in California applied for and received a demolition permit from Mahoning County to level the former Inglis Greenhouse on Southern Boulevard.
“The greenhouse and office will be removed and taken away. [It’s] great news, and it’s a long time coming,” Mamone said.
The building has been vacant since 2005, Mamone said.
The property had been formally declared a nuisance, and Beck & Co. was issued a home-rule violation and $500 fine that Mamone said she will try to get dismissed after demolition is completed.
The former greenhouse and Terrace Motel on Market Street were two properties identified by trustees as priorities for demolition.
“I give our zoning department credit. They have been relentless in talking to the owners,” said Trustee Larry Moliterno. “To me, this is the first step in showing we’re trying to be proactive with the issue of unsightly buildings,” he said.
The land is adjacent to 24 acres in the Cranberry Run headwaters owned by Mill Creek MetroParks. The MetroParks was denied a state grant to help it purchase the land and restore it to a natural environment. That grant did not include the cost of demolition.
Justin Rogers, planning manager for the park system, said the park still has an interest in the property.
“We have maintained an interest for the past year or so, and given the recent update that the structure will be demolished and all the debris removed from the site is potentially an exciting prospect for us,” said Rogers.
