VILLA MARIA, Pa.

Educational town-hall meetings on shale gas drilling in western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio continue with a session planned from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in Magnificat dining hall at Villa Maria Community Center.

Sister Nora Nash, director of the corporate social-responsibility program at the Sisters of St. Francis in Philadelphia, will speak. The session will deal with the stewardship of the earth and faith traditions.

Youngstown State University’s anthropology colloquium will sponsor a lecture by Dr. Jeffrey H. Schwartz on “The Mythology of Carthaginian Child Sacrifice” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at DeBartolo Hall, Room 132.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of the YSU History Club.

A professor of physical anthropology and history and philosophy of science at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Schwartz has published 12 books and more than 150 articles on primate and human evolution, human skeletal analysis and evolutionary theory. His research on Carthaginian child sacrifice was named one of Archaeology Magazine’s Top Ten Discoveries of 2010.

Drug disposal

YOUNGSTOWN

Unwanted prescription drugs will be accepted for disposal at St. Elizabeth Health Center’s Belmont Avenue entrance and at many local police departments from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday during the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

Participating police departments will be Boardman, Austintown, Poland Village, Beaver Township, Canfield, Jackson Township, New Middletown and Springfield Township.

New Hope United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., is a host site for Smart Choice Food Source. Boxes range from $13 to $35 and include meat, pasta and senior meals. There are no income restrictions or guidelines.

Preorder and prepay with cash, money orders or an Ohio Direction Card.

Orders for November will be accepted from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday and from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 3.

Donation received

WARREN

The Youngstown Foundation’s Mahoning Valley Sports Charities has made a $5,000 donation to Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority’s YouthBuild Trumbull County.

YouthBuild provides low- income people age 16 to 24 options to rebuild their community and their lives through construction projects.

Since 1995, YouthBuild has graduated 259 students while rehabilitating 11 houses and a 10-unit apartment complex, THMA says.

Electronics recycling

BERLIN CENTER

An electronics recycling drive will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Berlin Township Hall on U.S. Route 224.

Computers, printers, cellular phones, DVD and VCR units, table-top copiers and fax machines, keyboards and mice and stereos will be accepted for free. Monitors will be accepted at a charge of $15 each, and televisions with a 27-inch screen or smaller will be accepted for $20 each. Fees must be paid in cash, and no console televisions will be accepted. The drive is sponsored by the township and the Mahoning County recycling division.

The Warren City Council finance chairman has called a meeting for 4 p.m. today in council caucus room to review the agenda for council’s regular meeting Wednesday and for discussion with treasurer/tax administrator on a state proposal for eliminating local collection of income tax.

Flu-shot clinic

Shepherd of the Valley Home Health Care is offering a flu shot clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Lordstown Lutheran Church, 5616 Palmyra Road SW, for people 18 or older.

Insurance plans accepted are Humana, Anthem, Aetna, United Health Care, and Traditional Medicare. If paying privately, the cost is $25, cash or check.
