Mahoning Valley's unemployment numbers in Sept. lowest since recession
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning Valley’s unemployment rate in September was the lowest since the recession and down 1.4 percent compared to September 2010.
The tri-county area posted an unemployment rate of 9.2 percent. The last time it was that low was in December 2008, when it was also 9.2 percent.
There were 244,700 working residents in September, up 1,400 from the same month last year. The 24,700 unemployed was the lowest total since November 2008, when that number was 21,600.
At the recession’s trough, in July 2009, there were 38,400 unemployed Valley residents and the unemployment rate was 13.7 percent.
The area unemployment rate is still greater than the state and nationwide averages of 9.1 percent.
