Schools, principals honored at P-16 Partnership event

The Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education hosted its second annual “Excellence in Education — Celebrating our Schools” last week at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.
More than 100 building principals throughout Ashtabula, Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties were recognized for achieving Excellent or Excellent with Distinction on the Ohio Report Card.
In addition, Calcutta Elementary (Beaver Local School District), McKinley Elementary (Poland Local School District), Newton Falls Middle School and Badger Elementary, were recognized for moving up two levels on the 2010 Ohio Report Card.
The partnership also recognized two area residents for their commitment to education. They were Business Partner of the Year, Alex Benyo, vice president, Brilex Industries Inc., and Innovative Teacher of the Year, Haley Shaffer, Poland Middle School. Community partners are The Dominion Foundation, Kent State University, Youngstown State, Eastern Gateway Community College and Turning Technologies.
The Eastern Ohio P-16 Partnership for Education is a coalition of educators, businesspersons and civic and nonprofit leaders from Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties dedicated to fostering significantly better outcomes for students at each educational level.
Several area schools were presented with Excellence in Education Awards at the event. The Mahoning Valley schools that earned 2010 excellent with distinction awards were Calcutta Elementary School, Beaver Local; Canfield Village Middle and Hilltop Elementary, Canfield; Champion Middle School; East Palestine Elementary; H.C. Mines Elementary, Howland; Jackson-Milton Middle; Badger Elementary School, Joseph Badger; McDonald High; Newton Falls Middle; McKinley Elementary, Poland: Knox Elementary and West Branch Middle, West Branch.
The Valley schools recognized for earning an excellent distinction in 2010 were Austintown Middle, Fitch High, Lloyd, Lynn Kirk, Watson and Woodside elementaries, Austintown; Beaver Local High and Middle and Rogers Elementary, Beaver Local; Bloomfield High and Mesopotamia Elementary, Bloomfield-Mespo; Boardman High, Center and Glenwood middles, Market Street, Robinwood, Stadium Drive and West Boulevard elementaries; Bristol Elementary, Bristol Local; Brookfield Elementary and High; C.H.
