Watson’s new third-grade teacher Sarah Whitten finds family very important.

As an Austintown student for all of her school years, coming to Watson each morning offers many friendly, familiar faces.

In fact, it was the familial warmth of her elementary years at Lloyd that led her to her current profession.

“Sandy Russell at Lloyd taught me during my third and fourth grade years, and she is absolutely the reason I became a teacher. I was dealing with a lot when I was her student, and she took time out to give me special attention. She inspired me to teach,” explained Whitten.

Whitten still meets and chats with her favorite teacher, long after her graduation from Fitch High School and Youngstown State University with a degree in elementary education.

Whitten aims to offer warmth and personal attention in her own classroom. She’ll be making her class an exciting place with added fun in social studies and science.

“Math and literacy are the basics, of course, but there is a lot of fun to be had in social studies and science. I’ll be offering lots of fun projects,” Whitten said.

Although the details of her career are yet to be written, Whitten has a simple goal that she strives for.

“I hope to have a bond with my students the way that I did with my teachers. I want to make an impact. In my wildest dreams, I imagine being retired, and my students will still come to visit me,” Whitten shared.
