Although the “One World, Many Stories” summer reading program at Boardman library ended in September, the library’s top readers gathered at the facility on Sept. 29 for a Hawaiian celebration.
While there, they said “mahalo,” or thank you in Hawaiian, to their summer of reading fun. The evening event was hosted by librarians Karen Saunders and Ashley Bentfeld and featured reading awards, stories, crafts, games and snacks.
Saunders explored the event’s theme with Sharon Lee Asta’s “ABC’s of Hawaii,” which introduced traditional island foods, phrases, flowers and experiences.
After the story, Bentfeld taught the students the hula.
“Everything motion you make means something when you do this kind of dance,” she explained.
Bentfeld played some melodic island music and taught the group the signs for wave, smile, palm tree and ocean.
As the group split up for snacks and a flower lei craft, Saunders reflected on summer at the Boardman library.
“Reading participation was wonderful and our programs were very well attended this year,” shared Saunders.
For prize-winning reader Anna Fink, her love for stories didn’t stop after she received her prize.
“This summer, I read about princesses and about lots of animals like bears, cats, and lizards. I have lots of animals at home and I’ll always love to read and know more about them,” shared Fink.
