Church to host Upward youth basketball
The Poland United Methodist Church is currently accepting registration for the Youth K-6 Upward Sports Basketball and Cheerleading Program. Upward Sports is a co-ed rec league entering its third year. Upward Sports director Jared Woodward expects the program to grow once again with a greater need for volunteers for this season.
“Upward is an opportunity to learn about Christ in a fun and positive atmosphere,” said Woodward.
Upward consists of three different age divisions in both cheerleading and basketball. The groups are kindergarten through first grade, second through third grade and fourth through sixth grade.
Woodward said this is an opportunity for young people to experience sports fairly and equally.
“We teach the kids the basic skills of the sport and give them all equal playing time during each game and throughout the season,” said Woodward.
Woodward said the program focuses on developing skill in the sport and character outside of the sport. The program focuses on building a healthy relationship with Christ, but also builds the child’s self-confidence.
Upward basketball and cheerleading is designed to bring out “the winner” in every child and the true spirit of the game both in playing and cheering. Children are not required to belong to the church in order to participate in Upward Sports. All are welcome to participate.
The league is seeking volunteer coaches, referees and general help. To enroll or volunteer, call Jared at 330-519-3981 or download the player form at www.polandumc.org.
A “skills camp” will be Nov. 12 to evaluate each player so the teams can be equally matched. To ensure that all teams are equally paired, early registration is encouraged.
