Knowing and not doing aren’t the same

Marietta Times: Apparently most drivers understand “texting” while operating a motor vehicle is dangerous, even if they engage in the practice themselves.

Nearly 90 percent of those surveyed by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety want state laws banning drivers from using cell phones to compose and send text messages, the organization reported this week. Unfortunately, more than one-third of respondents also admitted they have been guilty of texting while driving.

Ohio legislators have been considering a ban on texting while driving. One obstacle, as usual, is whether such a measure would upset voters.

To judge by the AAA survey, most Ohioans would support a ban.

State legislators should stop hesitating and approve a bill — with teeth in it — to curb the dangerous practice in Ohio.
