Boardman teacher says Issue 2 silences educators

STRUTHERS

A Boardman High School English teacher said if state Issue 2 passes, it would make it difficult to properly educate students.

Dave Pavlansky, a 30-year teacher and president of the Boardman teachers union, said today that the bill “silences” the voices of educators about classroom sizes and other issues that impact students. Also, the bill removes workplace protection for teachers, he said.

Pavlansky said the bill “takes away collective bargaining.”

Mahoning County Republican Party Chairman Mark Munroe said that is not true.

The bill allows teachers to negotiate for wages, working conditions and hours of work. The bill would require public employees to pay at least 10 percent of their retirement pickup and 15 percent of their health insurance premiums.
