Arresting ‘illegals’ makes sense

This letter is to respond to Eric Ward’s Oct. 13 article, “Laws bad for all.” I have listened to the immigration debate for many years now. I believe that this country is great because it was founded by immigrants and is full of many diverse cultures. Many of these immigrants apply for and receive proper visas to come to the country; still many more come here illegally.

Every one of these illegals came to this country knowing that they were breaking our laws (that’s why we call them illegals). I do not believe that it is a waste of taxpayer money for police to apprehend these criminals, as Mr. Ward suggests.

I would point to Mexico’s General Population Act, which contains some of the very elements that Alabama laws are trying to implement in this country. With Mexico and many of its citizens who live illegally in the United States calling on Congress to provide more humane treatment for undocumented illegals, some Americans are irritated by what they see as hypocrisy.

With Alabama’s unemployment rate at 9.9 percent, it is hard to believe people are not clamoring to accept jobs lost by illegal immigrants fleeing.

Our immigration system is obviously broken and I can hardly blame the people of Alabama for trying to do something to remedy it.
